One pathway closed, and a narrow one remains.

The Career Employment Pathway ended on 11 June 2026 with immediate effect and no replacement, and it was the route most international graduates in Manitoba were relying on. The Graduate Internship Pathway is open, requires no job offer, and is built around a specific national research programme. This page covers both, and where graduates go now.

What closed, and what did not

Closed 11 June 2026 · a priority transition exists · verified 18 August 2026

The Career Employment Pathway closed, and there is a priority route out of it

It closed with immediate effect. It was the route for graduates of Manitoba institutions holding a full-time job offer in an in-demand occupation consistent with their field of study, and for most international graduates in the province it was the plan. No further draws will be held for it and no replacement pathway has been announced.

The province did not leave former candidates without a route. It invites those holding an active Career Employment Pathway profile who have at least six months of Manitoba work experience to transition to Skilled Worker in Manitoba, where they are considered in future draws on a priority basis. That is a materially better position than a closure with nothing behind it, and it is the first thing a former candidate should act on.

Nominations submitted before 11 June 2026 remain valid. Manitoba's own International Education Stream overview page still lists the pathway as available, so do not treat that page as current. The dated announcement is the authority.

The International Education Stream now has one pathway that is clearly open and drawing, and it is a narrow one. The Graduate Internship Pathway requires no job offer at all, which makes it valuable, but it is built around a specific national research programme rather than around graduation.

If you are a Manitoba graduate who has just discovered the closure, the important thing to understand is that the province has not stopped selecting graduates. It has stopped selecting them through that pathway. In draw 275 on 16 July 2026 Manitoba issued 1,874 invitations to candidates who had completed post-secondary study in the province, at a cut-off of 825. Those invitations went through the Skilled Worker Stream.

  • The Graduate Internship Pathway is open and drawing. Seventy-eight invitations in draw 275. It requires no job offer, which no other Manitoba pathway outside the overseas route can say.
  • It is built on Mitacs, not on graduation. Elevate or Accelerate, including Accelerate Entrepreneur, with an eligible Manitoba industry and research enterprise. An internship of another kind does not qualify, however similar.
  • The language requirement is higher than most. CLB or NCLC 7. Several provinces set 4 or 5. This is an eligibility floor rather than a scoring factor, so testing below it ends the matter.
  • Manitoba graduates are still being selected in volume. Through the Skilled Worker in Manitoba pathway, where completing post-secondary study in Manitoba is a drawn category and ongoing Manitoba employment carries 500 points.

What the Graduate Internship Pathway requires

Graduate Internship Pathway requirements at 18 August 2026
RequirementWhat Manitoba asks for
EducationA completed master's or doctoral degree programme in Manitoba, finished within the past three years.
InternshipA completed Mitacs Elevate or Accelerate internship, including Accelerate Entrepreneur, with an eligible Manitoba industry and research enterprise.
Job offerNot required.
LanguageCLB or NCLC 7 or equivalent. An eligibility floor, not a scoring factor.
Funds or employmentEither liquid funds equivalent to the federal low income cut-off for a six-month period, or full-time long-term employment in Manitoba.
ResidenceYou must be residing in Manitoba when you apply, and must show an intention to continue residing there after nomination.

Fee$500, non-refundable, paid when you submit the full application after an invitation.

No age limit is published for this pathway, and no fixed settlement funds figure appears on the stream page because it is tied to the federal low income cut-off, which changes. We confirm the current figure against the live source rather than print it here.

The Career Employment Plan is the part to take seriously. On a pathway with no job offer requirement, it is the document that carries the province's confidence that you will establish. A plan that names actual Manitoba employers, actual demand in your field and an actual progression is doing work that a job offer would otherwise do. A generic statement of intent is not.

Your situation

Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

What this does not test. It checks the published eligibility criteria of one pathway. It cannot confirm that your particular internship or host enterprise qualifies, which is the question this pathway turns on, and it cannot judge the strength of a Career Employment Plan, which on a pathway with no job offer requirement is what the application is largely decided on. It does not confirm the current settlement funds figure, which is tied to a threshold that changes. An indication only, not an eligibility decision and not legal advice.

If you are a Manitoba graduate without a Mitacs internship

Which is most graduates

The closure of the Career Employment Pathway removed the route built for you. What remains is better than it first appears, and it is worth walking through in order.

  • Skilled Worker in Manitoba is the main answer. Six months or more of continuous full-time work with an employer who will offer you long-term employment. Because you graduated in Manitoba, six months is the threshold rather than the twelve that applies to graduates of other provinces. Ongoing Manitoba employment is worth 500 of the 1,000 available points. The requirements.
  • Completing study in Manitoba is itself a drawn category. In draw 275 on 16 July 2026 the province issued 1,874 invitations to candidates who had completed post-secondary study in Manitoba, at a cut-off of 825. It is the largest single category Manitoba has drawn this year.
  • Your Manitoba study also scores directly. A Manitoba post-secondary programme of two years or more is worth 100 adaptability points, and one year is worth 50, though those are capped out if you also hold the 500 for ongoing employment.
  • French is worth having. Francophone candidates were drawn in both July draws. A second official language at CLB 5 is also worth 25 points on the grid.
  • Federal Express Entry runs in parallel. Canadian study and Canadian skilled work both score federally, and a Manitoba graduate with a year of Canadian experience is often a stronger federal candidate than they expect. The Canadian Experience Class.

What changed is the door, not the destination. Manitoba is still selecting its own graduates, in larger numbers than any other category, through a different pathway with a different requirement. The requirement is six months of continuous full-time work with an employer who will keep you. That is a real hurdle and it is not the same thing as being shut out.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to the Career Employment Pathway?

It closed on 11 June 2026, with immediate effect. It was the International Education Stream route for graduates of Manitoba institutions holding a full-time job offer in an in-demand occupation consistent with their field of study, and it was the pathway most international graduates in the province were relying on. No further draws will be held and no replacement pathway has been announced. Nominations submitted before that date remain valid. Crucially, Manitoba does provide a transition. Candidates with an active profile who hold at least six months of Manitoba work experience are invited to move to Skilled Worker in Manitoba and are considered there on a priority basis.

Manitoba's website still lists the Career Employment Pathway. Is it open after all?

No. The International Education Stream overview page still lists it as one of three pathways, more than two months after the closure. That page has not been updated. The closure is confirmed by the province's own dated announcement of 11 June 2026, and where a stream overview page and a dated announcement disagree, the announcement is the one to follow. This is a good illustration of why a single page on an official site is not always sufficient verification.

What is the Graduate Internship Pathway for?

Master's and doctoral graduates who completed a Mitacs Elevate or Accelerate internship, including Accelerate Entrepreneur, with an eligible Manitoba industry and research enterprise. It requires no job offer at all, which makes it unusual, and it is open and drawing. Seventy-eight invitations were issued under it in draw 275 on 16 July 2026.

What is a Mitacs internship?

Mitacs is a national not-for-profit that funds research internships pairing graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with industry partners. Elevate is its postdoctoral fellowship programme and Accelerate is its graduate internship programme. Manitoba has built this pathway specifically around them, which means the pathway is not open to a graduate who did an internship of some other kind, however similar it looked.

Do I need a job offer?

No. That is the pathway's most valuable feature. What replaces it is a Career Employment Plan showing that there are real opportunities for a successful career track for you in Manitoba, together with either liquid funds equivalent to the federal low income cut-off for six months or full-time long-term employment in the province.

What language level do I need?

CLB or NCLC 7 or equivalent. That is materially higher than the CLB 4 or 5 that several other provinces set, and it is a real requirement rather than a scoring factor. A candidate who satisfies everything else and tests at CLB 6 is not eligible.

I graduated in Manitoba but did not do a Mitacs internship. What is left to me?

The Career Employment Pathway would have been your route and it has closed. If you have six months or more of continuous full-time work with a Manitoba employer who will offer you long-term employment, Skilled Worker in Manitoba reaches you, and it is in most respects a stronger route because ongoing Manitoba employment is worth 500 of the 1,000 available points. Manitoba graduates were also drawn at volume in July 2026, with 1,874 invitations in a single draw. So the position is better than the closure makes it sound, provided you can get to the six months.

How long after graduating can I use this pathway?

The master's or doctoral programme must have been completed in Manitoba within the past three years, and you must be residing in Manitoba when you apply.
